CMPD offers reward for answers in shooting of 8-year-old

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department requests the public’s help to find the suspects involved in a shooting last month that left an 8-year-old hospitalized.

According to CMPD, officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call to a home on Burbank Drive near LaSalle Street shortly after 1 a.m. on April 24.

At the time of the shooting, there were 16 people inside the home, including nine children, CMPD said.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the home had been shot into dozens of times by multiple shooters, police said.

Police found an 8-year-old child, identified as Olivia Velez, who had been struck in the head by a bullet.

Velez was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. CMPD said she was still in the hospital as of May 3.

Police said they believe the shooting was not accidental and suspects intentionally targeted the home.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) offers $2,500 in addition to Charlotte CrimeStoppers’ $5,000 offering for information in the case.

This investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information can contact CrimeStoppers at 704-334-1600.
