CMPD officer faces charges after communicating threats

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer is facing misdemeanor after communicating threats to two victims on Wednesday.

The department charged Candyce Sellars with two counts of communicating threats

She  has been employed with the CMPD since April 2015 and was assigned to the Community Services Division as a school resource officer.

On Wednesday, officers responded to a 911 call regarding a victim being threatened with bodily harm by a known suspect. Officers later learned of a second victim who also reported being threatened with bodily harm by the same person, who was identified as Sellars.

A patrol supervisor responded to the call and immediately notified the CMPD Internal Affairs Division who began an internal investigation.

Detectives presented this case to a Mecklenburg County Magistrate, who in lieu of a summons, issued two warrants on two counts of communicating threats for the arrest of Sellars.

She turned herself into the Mecklenburg County Detention Center at 3:27am on Friday. She has been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.

“It is always disheartening to me when I learn that one of our officers has violated the very laws that we are sworn to uphold.  Professional accountability is a priority for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and our officers are expected to maintain this standard at all times,” Chief Johnny Jennings said in a statement.
