Paul Silas, former head coach for the Charlotte Hornets and Charlotte Bobcats, has died at age 79.

In his 16 years as a player, Silas won three NBA championships with Boston and Seattle. He later coached the Charlotte Hornets to consecutive winning seasons from 1998 to 2002.

Silas’ second stint as Charlotte’s head coach ended following the 2011-12 season.

Hornets owner Michael Jordan called Silas “an incredible leader and motivator.”

“He combined the knowledge developed over nearly 40 years as an NBA player and coach with an innate understanding of how to mix discipline with his never-ending positivity,” Jordan said.

“He was one of the all-time great people in our game,” Jordan continued, “and he will be missed.”
