Livingstone College is set to christen its new football stadium

In a game dubbed the West End Classic, Livingstone College will kick off its football season on Saturday by christening its remodeled Alumni Memorial Stadium.

The $2.8 million sports complex includes a new and extended track, a video scoreboard and a football field with distinctive blue turf.

Kimberly Harrington, a Livingstone spokeswoman, said this year’s West End Classic will be significant.

In addition to being the first game played on the new field, it also marks the return of the Mayor’s Cup, in which the mayor of Salisbury will present a trophy to the winning team for the first time since 2013.

The Livingstone Blue Bears will open their season against Catawba College. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 4:20 p.m. Pre-game festivities will include a pep rally.

The school also will hold a ceremony to honor community leaders from Salisbury’s historic West End, where the campus is located. Honorees will receive the Fannie T. Butler Community Impact Award, named after the late Fannie T. Butler, a former member of the West End Coalition.

The coalition’s leader, Dee Dee Wright, said in a statement that the three honorees would be the first to receive the award.
