On Tuesday, Charlotte Hornets basketball players Bryce McGowens and Nick Richards worked with 16 students from Charlotte Lab School to make custom basketball hoops that illustrate Black history.

The Spectrum Center event was sponsored by Hornets Sports & Entertainment and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.

In an interview with WSOC-TV, McGowens said his group painted parts of their basketball goal red to represent the blood sacrificed by Black people.

Journey Dixie, 17, helped paint a backboard that paid tribute to Michelle Obama, Michael Jordan and the late Chadwick Boseman.

Dixie said she admires Jordan, in particular, because of his legacy.
