Police release photos of man suspected in ATM killing; victim’s son pleads for info

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department released photographs of a man suspected of killing a woman at a bank ATM in the University City area.

Karen Baker, 48, died July 13 after she was shot during a robbery in the 9600 block of University City Boulevard. The shooting was reported shortly after 5:48 a.m.

The police have not named a suspect but said Baker did not know the shooter. On Thursday the department released a series of photographs that show a masked man dressed in black at the scene of the shooting. In one of the images, the man is holding what appears to be a gun.

The suspect left the location after getting into the passenger side of a black Dodge Charger, model year 2011-2012, leading police to conclude that a second person was driving the car.

“We’re following up on all possible leads in this case to find out who’s responsible and hold them accountable in Karen’s death,” Lt. Bryan Crum, who heads CMPD’s violent crimes division, told reporters.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Crum said callers need not leave their names.

“It’s very, very critical that, if somebody has information in this case, that they give us a call,” he said.

Baker, originally from Waynesville in western North Carolina, was a mother to four and a grandmother to three.

Baker’s son, Michael McClure, who was present at Thursday’s police briefing, said his mother “was the type of person to make you feel better, regardless of who you are or what you were going through.”

McClure said his mother came from a small town that was nothing like Charlotte. His mother grieved, he said, when she lost a son years ago, but she managed to get through it. He asked for the public’s help in catching his mother’s killer.

“I know that at the end of the day, what sucks the most is that there is not one damed thing I can do to bring my mom back.”
