State health officials change Covid-19 guideline for schools

The Department of Health and Human Services says students and staff no longer should stay home from school if simply exposed to Covid-19.

The new guidelines, announced yesterday, prioritize keeping students in classrooms.

Why it matters: As infection rates drop, states nationwide are moving to ease restrictions and mandates.

In North Carolina, the state agency also recommends an end to contact tracing in K-12 schools.

“This is the right approach for this point in the pandemic…,” the department said in a press statement.

The department still recommends keeping students home when they are sick or test positive for Covid-19.

The new guidelines are effective Feb. 21.
