This week in Charlotte: three new exhibitions at the Gantt Center

This weekend, The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture will open three new exhibitions.

Together they offer a window onto the past, present and future of Black art and culture.

FuturePresent: Acquisition Highlights from the Permanent Collection (January 28, 2022 – June 26, 2022)

Without the African-American art collection of John and Vivian Hewitt, the Gantt Center wouldn’t be what it is today. This exhibition examines the Hewitt’s collection and visualizes how art will evolve at the Gantt Center and beyond.

Reflection of a People: Photographs from the Archive of Jamel Shabazz (January 28, 2022 – March 6, 2022)

Jamel Shabazz has been photographing the lives of Black people for more than 40 years. Through his work, he wants to preserve history and show Black lives over the years for future generations.

Visible Man: Art and Black Male Subjectivity ( January 28, 2022 – April 24, 2022)

The Black image has been demonized for centuries. This exhibition will challenge past works by offering a creative look into African-American males through cultural, racialized and personal lenses.
