West Charlotte High names Stephen Joyner Jr. its new athletic director


West Charlotte High School named Stephen Joyner Jr. its new athletic director on Tuesday.

Joyner, Jr. joins West Charlotte after resigning as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Johnson C. Smith in Nov.2022. In his nine years with the Golden Bulls he earned a 147-102 record that includes the 2016-17 CIAA tournament title.

He comes from an extensive family tree of coaches.

His father Stephen Joyner, Sr. also served as the head women’s basketball coach at JCSU and currently holds the mark for most wins of any active coach in the CIAA as the Golden Bulls head men’s basketball coach. 

Joyner, Jr.’s uncle, the late Edward Joyner, Sr. served as head men’s basketball coach at Livingstone College and Saint Paul’s College. His first cousin, Edward Joyner, Jr. is currently the head men’s basketball coach at Hampton University.

He will be introduced Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. during its Varsity boys basketball game against West Mecklenburg High School at West Charlotte High School’s Charles McCullough gym.
